課程概述 |
Course Description:
This course explores a series of literary texts and critical essays, with emphases on the questions of critical thinking, rhetoric, and the role of language in creative writing. In addition to expanding your knowledge and perspectives of English and American literatures and their cultural-historical contexts through the course materials, we aim to help the students become more skilled and proficient readers in English. Our approaches will be based on our close readings of the texts themselves (as opposed to, for instance, the biographical information or the historical contexts), although different frameworks of interpretation will be adopted after we gain familiarity with the texts.

Course Objective:
The objective of this course is multiple: to enhance the reading and communication skills of non-English majors, familiarize them with more sophisticated uses of English, situate their readings in intellectual backgrounds, and develop their sensibility toward the English language and ability of critical thinking, which is essential to studies in all academic fields.

課程要求 |
Requirements and Grading:
Active participations in in-class discussions are quintessential to this course, as the time for lecturing will be minimized after the first few weeks. Each student is supposed to do two oral presentations on the readings. While you can use any language you like for in-class discussions insofar as other people in the classroom understand you, formal presentations have to be conducted mainly in English. There will be a mid-term exam on the readings covered thus far in the semester. A term paper submitted at the end of the semester is part of the course requirements. The topics of your term paper, however, have to be relevant to our course materials and are subject to the approval of the teacher.
The final grade will be calculated according to the following breakdown:
Midterm exam 25%
Final paper 30%
Oral presentations: 20 %
Participation, attendance, and homework: 25%
* We will arrange your group members or partners in the first few weeks.
Important Note on Attendance:
Participation begins with attendance. Please be advised that you are supposed to come to each class unless you are forced to miss it in situations such as an emergency. Since it’s unlikely that one would encounter four emergencies during the course of a semester, anyone who has four absences or more will automatically fail this course.

Required Readings and Tentative Schedule:
We plan to cover at least two novels before January, depending on students’ responses and progress during the course of the semester. Our class will start with Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, partly because it is not quite a novel (about one-third the length of a typical novel). The reading of the novella itself will be followed by discussions of a few selected critical essays on the text (collected in the same volume of the Norton critical edition of Heart of Darkness).
After the midterm exam, we will be focusing on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and some of the critical essays on this novel (also collected in its Norton critical edition). If we still have time to spare after finishing these two novels, students will be encouraged to read and interpret Hanif Kureishi’s The Buddha of Suburbia by themselves (the instructor will provide guidance if necessary). This last work is easier to follow in terms of its language and narrative style and can be the topic of students’ term paper, which otherwise should be about The Scarlet Letter.
* Note: The aforementioned novels are all available at Bookman Bookstore (書林書局). Make sure that you obtain EXACTLY the same edition; otherwise you would not be able to find the assigned critical essays or the pages we refer to.
